Water from air for farms and game lodges

Published 1 November 2026 · 6 min read

Farms and lodges often have water, just not water anyone wants to drink. Borehole water can be hard, salty or questionable, and trucking in bottled water to remote places is expensive. A water generator gives guests and staff clean drinking water on site, and can purify the borehole water too.

Short version: use a water generator for drinking water: guests, staff housing and the kitchen. It is not for irrigation or livestock. The 80L suits most lodges and farmhouses; larger guest operations use the 1000L. In dry inland areas, dual mode (generation plus borehole purification) is what keeps it useful all year.

Location matters

Coastal and Lowveld lodges get strong output in summer. Bushveld, Karoo and Kalahari sites are dry for much of the year, so plan to purify borehole water through the unit in the dry season and generate from the air when humidity allows. See the regional humidity guide, and our pages for Botswana and Namibia.

Purifying borehole water

Feed the unit from your borehole or tank and it filters and UV-sterilises the water to drinking quality for most common problems: sediment, taste and bacteria. Very salty or mineral-heavy boreholes may need extra pre-treatment, so send us a recent borehole water test and we will tell you honestly whether the unit can handle it.

Power off-grid

The 20L draws about 970 W and the 80L about 1.25 kW, which most lodge solar systems can carry with battery support. The 1000L needs three-phase power and a commercial solar system or generator (see our solar sizing guide).

For guest-facing water

If you serve the water to guests, keep a filter-change log and test it periodically at an accredited laboratory, as you would for any guest water supply.

Questions

Can a water generator supply water for livestock or irrigation?

No. Water generators produce drinking quantities. Livestock and irrigation need far larger volumes that boreholes and dams supply much more cheaply.

Can a water generator purify borehole water?

Yes. Feed it from your borehole or tank and it filters and UV-sterilises the water. Very salty boreholes may need extra pre-treatment; send us your water test.

Which water generator suits a game lodge?

Most lodges with 10–30 guests use one or two SkyTap 80L units. Large lodges and estates use the 1000L for a central supply.

Sources and assumptions. Output and power figures are the manufacturer's tested values for SkyTap units (1000L: about 1,000 L/day at 30°C and 80% RH, 600 L/day at 27°C and 60% RH, 135 L/day at 25°C and 30% RH, 8.7 kW). Electricity costs and solar yields are planning assumptions stated in the text, not quotes. Prices are SkyTap's published unit prices at the time of writing and are confirmed in a written quotation.
