Water generators in Botswana
Published 29 October 2026 · 6 min read
Botswana is a summer-rain country, and that shapes everything about a water generator there: strong output from November to April, then a long, dry winter. Here is what to realistically expect, town by town.
Short version: in Gaborone a unit produces well in the summer rains and much less in the dry months, especially August to October. It makes most sense as a dual-mode unit that generates in summer and purifies borehole or municipal water the rest of the year. Maun and the Okavango area are more humid in season.
What Gaborone's climate means for output
Gaborone averages about 51–55% relative humidity from December to April, with warm days around 30–32°C. That puts a machine in the middle of its range, producing solid volumes. Humidity then falls through winter to a low of about 30% in September. Winter nights drop to around 4–8°C, so place the unit indoors where it stays above 15°C.
Francistown follows a similar pattern. Maun and the Okavango Delta are more humid during the rains and floods. The Kalahari areas to the west (Ghanzi, Tsabong) are drier and only marginal for generation.
| Location | Wetter / humid months | Driest months | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaborone, south-east | 51–55% (Dec–Apr) | 30–36% (Aug–Oct) | Good summer, weak late winter |
| Maun, Okavango | Humid rainy season | Dry winter | Good in season |
| Kalahari (Ghanzi, Tsabong) | Moderate in rains | Very dry | Marginal; buy for purification |
Planning estimates for Gaborone
| Unit | Typical season | Toughest season |
|---|---|---|
| SkyTap 20L | about 9–13 L a day | about 3–5 L a day |
| SkyTap 80L | about 35–50 L a day | about 11–18 L a day |
Use it as a purifier too
Many Botswana homes, farms and lodges rely on boreholes or have experienced municipal supply interruptions. Feed a SkyTap unit from your tap, tank or borehole and it filters and UV-sterilises the water, so it keeps supplying drinking water through the dry months when generation slows.
Power
Units run on 230 V, 50 Hz, Botswana's standard supply. The 20L draws about 970 W and the 80L about 1.25 kW while running. For solar installations, remember that humidity, and therefore output, is highest overnight and early morning.
Delivery to Botswana
Botswana is in the Southern African Customs Union, so units travel by road from South Africa and we can quote in rand. Imported electrical goods may be subject to Botswana Bureau of Standards import inspection; we confirm what applies for your order.
How export orders work
- Priced DDP (delivered duties paid). Your quote includes the unit, sea or road freight, destination customs clearance, duties and delivery to your door. No surprise charges on arrival.
- Quoted per order in US dollars, or in rand for SACU countries on request. Volume pricing applies from about 5 units.
- Compliance checked before you pay. We confirm the destination's import and product-conformity requirements for your order, and build any certification cost into the quote.
- Units supplied for your power: 230 V, 50 Hz, the same as Botswana's grid.
- After-sales: warranty parts, replacement filters and remote support are supplied from South Africa or directly from the manufacturer. SkyTap doesn't send technicians abroad, so a local plumber or electrician handles installation where needed.
Questions
Do water generators work in Gaborone?
Yes, best from November to April when humidity averages about 51–55%. Output falls in the dry winter, especially August to October, when using the unit as a purifier makes more sense.
How much water will an 80L unit make in Botswana?
In Gaborone, roughly 35–50 litres a day in summer and around 11–18 litres in the driest months.
Can you deliver to Maun or Francistown?
Yes. We deliver door to door across Botswana. Remote areas take a little longer and cost a little more, and your quote shows the exact amount.
Want a delivered price for your site?
Tell us your town, what the water is for and roughly how many litres a day you need. We'll come back with a DDP quote and an honest output estimate for your conditions.
Sources. Monthly humidity figures are 1991–2020 modelled averages (NASA POWER) via Climate-Zone; Dubai figures from the climate table in Climate of Dubai. Output figures are the manufacturer's tested values (80L unit: about 80 L/day at 30°C and 80% RH, about 50 L/day at 27°C and 60% RH, about 11 L/day at 25°C and 30% RH). Local estimates are modelled from that curve; they are planning guidance, not measured field results.
