What output to expect where you live in South Africa

Anyone quoting you a daily output figure without asking where you live is guessing. Humidity is the variable that decides everything, and it varies enormously across this country.
Short version: coastal regions get close to rated output year-round. The Highveld works all year with a meaningful winter dip. The dry interior is marginal for atmospheric generation and there you should buy for the purification function or not at all.
Why humidity decides everything
An atmospheric water generator condenses moisture already present in the air. The more moisture there is, the more water it collects for the same electricity. This is not a design limitation anyone can engineer away — it is the physics the machine runs on.
The published output figures give you a curve to work from. For the 80L unit:

Notice the curve is not linear. Between 80% and 60% you lose about a third. Between 60% and 30% you lose nearly everything remaining. The steep part of that curve is where most of South Africa's winter sits.
Region by region
KwaZulu-Natal coast — Durban and surrounds
The best conditions in the country for this technology. Warm and humid nearly year-round, often sitting close to the rating conditions. Expect output near the top of the published range for much of the year, with a modest winter dip.
If you are on this coast and considering a generator, the atmospheric mode will do real work every day.
Western Cape coast — Cape Town and surrounds
Good, with a seasonal pattern opposite to the rest of the country. The wet winter brings high humidity — good for generation, though cooler temperatures offset some of the gain. The dry summer is warm but less humid.
Net effect: solid year-round performance, with the peaks and troughs falling in different months from Gauteng.
Eastern Cape coast — Gqeberha, East London
Good. Coastal humidity throughout the year with moderate temperatures. Reliable output, generally between the Durban and Cape Town cases.
Highveld — Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand
Works all year, with a clear summer-winter split. Johannesburg humidity runs from around 46% in August, the driest month, to roughly 70% in February, averaging about 59%.
Read that against the curve: summer conditions land you in the productive part of the range, while winter sits between the middle and lower rows. Both remain above the 25% minimum a compressor unit needs, so the machine keeps working all year — you simply get less in winter.
This is the region where dual mode earns its keep most obviously. Generate through the humid months, purify through the dry ones.
Lowveld and Mpumalanga — Nelspruit, Hoedspruit
Good, particularly in summer. Hot and humid summers put conditions near the rating. Winters are dry but mild, so output drops without stopping.
Free State and North West — Bloemfontein, Rustenburg
Moderate, with a pronounced dry season. Continental interior climate: humid enough in the summer rainfall months, considerably drier in winter. Expect a wider seasonal swing than the Highveld.
Northern Cape and Karoo — Kimberley, Upington, Beaufort West
Marginal for atmospheric generation, and we will say so plainly. This is genuinely arid country where humidity frequently sits below 30% and can go far lower. A compressor unit will still produce something, but at the bottom of the curve, and at a cost per litre that is hard to justify.
If you are in this region, buy one of these machines for its purification capability with atmospheric generation as an occasional bonus — or do not buy one at all. We would rather lose the sale than have you disappointed.
Reading your own conditions
Regional generalisations only get you so far. Your actual output depends on your specific site.
- Check your local humidity rather than your province's. Any weather app shows current relative humidity; watch it across a week.
- Note the daily cycle. Humidity is usually highest in the early morning and lowest mid-afternoon. Machines often collect more overnight than during the day.
- Indoor differs from outdoor. A kitchen runs more humid than the garden; an air-conditioned office runs far drier.
- Altitude matters. The Highveld's elevation contributes to its dry winters.
- Proximity to water helps. Coastal, riverside and dam-adjacent locations run more humid than their regional average.
