Compressor vs thermoelectric: why the cheap units fail here

If you are comparing a R4,000 unit to a R20,000 one and wondering what could possibly justify the difference, this is it. It is one component, and it decides whether the machine works in July.
Short version: cheap atmospheric water generators use thermoelectric (Peltier) cooling, which stops producing meaningful water below roughly 60% relative humidity. Compressor-based units keep working down to about 25%. Johannesburg spends its entire winter under 60%. In South African conditions this is not a nice-to-have distinction — it is the whole thing.
Both types do the same job, very differently
Every atmospheric water generator works the same way in principle: chill a surface below the dew point of the surrounding air, and moisture condenses on it. The difference is entirely in how the machine gets that surface cold, and how cold it can actually get it.
Thermoelectric (Peltier) cooling
A Peltier module is a solid-state plate that gets cold on one side and hot on the other when current passes through it. No moving parts, no refrigerant, very cheap to manufacture, and almost silent.
The catch is that a Peltier plate can only pull the surface a limited number of degrees below ambient temperature. That is fine when the air is already close to saturated — on a humid coastal morning at 80% humidity, the dew point is only a few degrees below air temperature and a modest chill is enough to start condensation.
As humidity falls, the dew point drops away from air temperature fast. At 40% relative humidity on a 25°C day the dew point sits around 10°C. At 30% it is around 6°C. A thermoelectric module struggling to achieve a 15-degree differential simply cannot reach that, so nothing condenses. The machine runs, the fan spins, the display lights up, and no water appears.
In practice, thermoelectric units become unreliable below roughly 60% relative humidity and largely stop producing below about 50%.
Compressor cooling
A compressor unit uses a vapour-compression refrigeration cycle — the same technology as your fridge or air conditioner. A refrigerant is compressed, condensed, expanded and evaporated in a loop, and that loop can drive the evaporator coil far below ambient temperature regardless of what the air is doing.
That means it can still reach the dew point when the dew point is low. Compressor-based units in this class are typically rated to operate down to around 25% relative humidity — the 80L unit we supply carries exactly that rating.
The trade-offs are real and worth stating: compressors cost more, they are heavier, they have moving parts that can eventually fail, and they make some noise. What you get for that is a machine that still works in August.
Why this matters specifically in South Africa
Johannesburg's humidity runs from roughly 46% in August, its driest month, to about 70% in February, averaging around 59% across the year.
Read that against the two thresholds and the picture is stark:

A thermoelectric unit bought for a Gauteng home is a machine that works properly for a few months of the year and sits idle for the rest. That is what the price difference buys you, and it is why the cheap units are not the bargain they look like.
How to tell which one you are looking at
Sellers of thermoelectric units rarely advertise the fact. Here is how to work it out:
- Check the stated minimum humidity. This is the most reliable tell. If the spec sheet says 60% or higher — or omits the figure entirely — assume thermoelectric. Compressor units advertise low minimums because it is their main advantage.
- Check the weight. A compressor, refrigerant circuit and coils are heavy. Our 20L unit weighs about 42 kg and the 80L about 77 kg. A 20L-class machine weighing 10 kg does not contain a compressor.
- Look for a refrigerant type. R134a, R410a or R290 listed on the spec sheet means a compressor. No refrigerant listed usually means no compressor.
- Watch for "silent" or "no moving parts" as selling points. Those are thermoelectric advantages being marketed as features.
- Check the power draw against the output. A machine claiming 20 litres a day on 200W is not doing it with a compressor, and probably is not doing it at all.
Is a thermoelectric unit ever the right buy?
Yes, in narrow circumstances, and it is worth saying so. If you live somewhere reliably humid — the KwaZulu-Natal coast, for instance — and you want a small personal dispenser rather than a household water supply, a thermoelectric unit at a fraction of the price can be perfectly reasonable.
What it is not is a water security solution for the Highveld. If the reason you are buying is that you want water when the municipal supply fails, and that failure could happen in winter, a thermoelectric unit will not be there when you need it.
The question worth asking any seller
One question separates the two immediately: "what is the minimum relative humidity this unit produces water at, and what is its rated output at 30% humidity?"
A compressor unit's seller will answer with a number. A thermoelectric unit's seller will change the subject, quote the rated 80% figure again, or tell you it "depends on conditions". That evasion is your answer.
